Places to Get Tested

We've listed places to get tested below, and we have set the ones we know—or have a pretty good idea—are trans friendly at the top. The sites are tagged as being located in certain areas of Dallas; locations are general, and one site may show up in more than one filtered area of the city.

If you are uncomfortable going to a site to get tested, contact Trans Pride and we will do our best to arrange for someone to accompany you. Please give us a few days advance notice so we can arrange it with our schedules.

We are also including prices of tests if we know them, but that is also subject to change. Some tests are free (usually HIV and syphilis are free), but others may cost. It is good to check around to get the best price. Sometimes the Dallas County Health Department can work with you on prices more than other testing organizations (see strong cautions about their services, below).

Because we want this to be a resource that guides trans and gender nonconforming persons to trans affirming places, we want to hear if you have a bad experience! You can also post your experiences in our Trans Health Forum. There is NO EXCUSE for someone to not use your preferred name and your gender pronouns. Do not accept someone trying to make you a second-class citizen because you are not. The sites that should be the best at working with the trans community can be viewed by clicking "Trans Friendly" below.

Important note: Remember, if any location does not have forms that ask for your information in an appropriate manner, write what they should ask on the intake or other forms! That means if they don't ask for your preferred name, write it in anyway! If they only ask for "sex" and don't have a sex that fits for you, write in what you want! We recommend writing in "Current gender identity" and "Gender assigned at birth" at a minimum. These are explained on the data collection page of the Center of Excellence for Transgender Health web site. Also, all these organizations receive funding under requirements that include prohibitions on discrimination against a person due to gender identity. If you feel you have been discriminated against due to your gender identity, we want to know. Last, if ANY program offering PrEP or other services excludes trans persons for any reason, or is structured in a way that implies trans women are part of the subgroup of "men who have sex with men," that should be reported as discriminatory and as contributing to violence against trans persons as a whole.

Dallas County Health and Human Services Clinic

Address: 2377 North Stemmons Freeway, Room 100, Dallas, Texas 75207
Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday—8am to 4pm; Wednesday—10am to 6pm
Fee: $20 (fees cash or check only), free at the mobile clinic
Tests offered: gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, HIV, herpes, trichomonas, chancroid
Phone: 214-819-1819
Web: clinic information page (includes link to calendar with mobile unit locations)
Additional info: The herpes test is just an exam if you have visible symptoms, not a blood test. Important Note: In August 2020, we learned that Dallas County HHS excludes trans men from their PrEP program. TPI firmly believes this is discriminatory behavior and believes this may indicate other discriminatory treatment as well. Not only is this discriminatory, this continues the tendency in health services to consider trans women as men (as part of the men who have sex with men category) and contributes to social violence against trans women in particular and trans persons in general. TPI currently recommends avoiding the Dallas County Health and Human Services Clinic as a discriminatory service.

Notes: Please if you do seek services at Dallas County, let us know if you do or do not have a good experience here. We would be interested in whether their intake forms are affirming, so if they aren't allowing you to write the information they need to know about you, or if they ask for it in a way that is not affirming, cross it out and write in your own! It's your information, and you should control how you are comfortable providing it!

However, all organizations can learn more from clients willing to be advocates for themselves. If their paperwork does not ask for information in a way that is meaningful to you and your trans identity, be sure to mark changes that will let them know what language works to affirm you, your health, and your safety!

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Out of the Closet Store

Notes: AHF is a very trans friendly and supportive organization that makes an effort to be affirming to all persons, trans and non-trans. However, all organizations can learn more from clients willing to be advocates for themselves. If their paperwork does not ask for information in a way that is meaningful to you and your trans identity, be sure to mark changes that will let them know what language works to affirm you, your health, and your safety!

Parkland Hospital Amelia Court HIV/AIDS Clinic

Address: 1936 Amelia Court, Dallas, Texas 75235
Hours: Monday through Friday—8:30am to 4pm

Web: info about Amelia Court and other clinics with HIV services (see Notes)
Additional info: Must be HIV/AIDS patient for STD testing; must bring photo ID and proof of income and address; walk-in HIV testing available but not always staffed.

Notes: The staff at Amelia Court are very trans affirming and work well with the community. Other Parkland clinics also offer HIV/STD testing, but our experience indicates medical staff are sometimes "uncomfortable" working with trans persons and may exhibit microaggessions that contribute to undermining trans identities. We recommend trans persons test at Amelia Court if possible. Regardless of location, the paperwork that we have seen is binary-gender based, so if your selections are not listed, write in your own!

UT Southwestern Community Prevention and Intervention Unit (CPIU)

Address: 8150 Brookriver Drive, Suite 400, Dallas, Texas 75247
Hours: Monday through Friday—9am to 5pm
Fee: HIV and syphilis free; hepatitis free if high risk
Tests offered: HIV, syphilis, hepatitis C
Phone: 469-291-2800
Web: The main page has general information (some out of date), and the CPIU Facebook page has more up-to-date information about outreach locations.
Additional info: CPIU outreach folks are at various locations, usually several times a week. These include the Amelia Court (Friday morning till 11:30am), and the Walgreens on Cedar Springs every other Friday.

Notes: The UTSW CPIU staff are very trans friendly and affirming, and work to accommodate everyone, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. However, we know that many healthcare forms and paperwork can be problematic for trans persons. If their paperwork does not ask for information in a way that is meaningful to you and your trans identity, be sure to let them know and mark changes to show what language works to affirm you, your health, and your safety! We feel the staff will want your input.

Resource Center Nelson-Tebedo Clinic

Web: clinic info
Additional info: Must have a photo ID except for anonymous HIV testing (which is not free); can be any photo ID, including a student ID or ID from another country.

Notes: The staff are trans friendly, and although the current intake form is binary, we have seen and contributed to the design of a new intake form that should be approved soon (this note dated August 11, 2015), with very inclusive gender and name fields! As always, though, if you don't feel they are asking for your identity and information in the right way, cross out their limited selections and write your own!

U-BE (United Black Ellument)

Address: 3116 Commerce Street, Suite C, Dallas, Texas 75226
Hours: first and third Tuesdays—5pm to 7pm
Fee: free
Tests offered: HIV
Phone: 214-760-9718
Web: testing info page
Additional info: Must call for an appointment

Notes: This facility is primarily for Black cisgender MSM, but they are friendly and affirming to the trans community. Trans men should be comfortable here, but as this program specifically targets men, trans women may not be comfortable. They likely have the same very binary-based intake form used at the Nelson-Tebedo Clinic, so remember that if you don't feel they are asking for your identity and information in the right way, you have the right to cross out their limited selections and write your own!

Abounding Prosperity

Address: 2311 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Boulevard, Dallas, Texas 75215
Hours: call for hours
Fee: free
Tests offered: HIV, syphilis
Phone: 214-421-4800
Web: programs and services info
Additional info: Abounding Prosperity also operates a mobile testing unit at various locations throughout the week.

Notes: Abounding Prosperity's focus is primarily to address health disparities of Black cisgender men, but they have a trans empowerment program supporting trans feminine persons. As with all locations, if you don't feel their forms are asking for information they need or should ask about your identity, or if they are not doing so in an affirming way, cross out the provided selections and write your own! The will benefit from your information, and you will advocate for the community.

Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, Shelburne Health Center

Tests offered: HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes
Phone: 214-368-1485
Web: clinic info and online appointment request tool
Additional info: Some charges may apply, but some are covered. If you want to use health insurance to cover the costs, bring your insurance information. You may book appointments online at the link above.

Notes: Staff at the Shelburne Health Center have had training in trans cultural awareness and affirmation. We are only including this location because we don't know for sure if other Planned Parenthood locations have had training (but we are happy to update this and invite comment from folks who have visited the other facilities). Some men may be uncomfortable accessing services here because for many persons, Planned Parenthood is strongly associated with women's services. If you need someone to accompany you to this location, please feel free to contact us and we will try to arrange for someone to go with you.

Greater Dallas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse

Address: 1349 Empire Central Drive, Dallas, Texas 75247
Hours: Monday through Friday—8am to 5pm
Fee: free
Tests offered: HIV
Phone: 214-522-8600
Web: HIV Outreach Program info, with off-site test locations
Additional info: Call to see if testing on-site that day or if only at outreach locations.

Notes: The testing staff should be trans affirming, but we have no specific reports of experiences good or bad from this organization. Keep in mind that their intake and information forms may not ask for information in a way that is meaningful to trans persons. Know that you can modify them to add language that is appropriate for you, your health, and your safety if you feel that is appropriate!

Los Barrios Unidos Community Clinic

Address: 3111 Sylvan Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75212
Hours: Monday through Friday—7am to 5pm; Saturday—8am to 4pm
Fee: free HIV, call for others
Tests offered: HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia
Phone: 214-651-8739
Web: adult services info page
Additional info: Most services are offered on a sliding scale fee.

Notes: We have discussed services with administrators at Los Barrios Unidos, and they seemed interested in becoming a trans-affirming provider. However, all our contacts have now left. Our one experience accompanying a client on a physician visit was very disappointing. The front staff were friendly, but the medical staff for this visit were not. Be aware that if you seek services here, some staff may not be trans affirming. As elsewhere, if their forms and information do not ask for information in a way that is meaningful to you as a trans person, be sure to feel you can cross out their wording and correct it to your own! It is your health and your information, you have a right to define what is appropriate!
